Why Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.
Following his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
