UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
