Torrential Downpours Worsen Circumstances for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, UN Alert
Intense storms over the past week have intensified the extremely difficult circumstances of the hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in the territory, according to aid agencies.
"Awful" Weather Poses Severe Dangers
A official described the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with downpours so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"These conditions was really difficult for the people. The storms were so powerful... And the gusts were so forceful," noted the official.
Authorities voice grave concern that children residing in makeshift shelters in damp clothing will succumb to hypothermia and various illnesses.
Fatalities and Significant Destruction
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has died from hypothermia and at least 11 other people have been killed in building collapses due to the storms.
Additional accounts suggest a greater fatality count. Officials reported that multiple homes had totally fallen and dozens had collapsed partially.

Aid Efforts Deemed Insufficient
Agencies have stepped up deliveries of tarpaulins, bedding and clothing following the truce commenced, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are working relentlessly to provide that relief and to allocate it, but the scale of the necessities is so immense that we continue to see a great number of individuals and children who are really suffering nightly," warned one representative.
Long-Term Concerns and Truce Plans
The second phase of the ceasefire involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of military forces, and other terms.
Aid bodies have stressed the imperative for "greater and continuous relief to meet pressing and future requirements."
The hostilities was triggered by an offensive in the autumn of 2023. Later actions have caused a high number of casualties in the region, based on health ministry data.
