For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is understood of his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
