The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
