That Gruesome Animated Film Conclusion That Stays With Audiences
Out of every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the fear-filled finale of the explicitly bloody as well as highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, the Spanish writer-director developed a dark, melancholy , frequently brutal world with several minor , desolate hints of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars appears as it originated from a desire to push the medium further, the director explained that it was more a try to communicate a widespread, multicultural theme about “the shared root of all wars.”
That idea is expressed through a squad of colorful pastel bears , clearly inspired by a well-known line of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a society focused on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of these animals are fixated on slaughtering the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text that claims the bears they were once masters of the woodland, before the horned beings drove them out.
Others haven’t fully accepted the propaganda, and choose to experiment with drugs and mate outdoors.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these vivid animals display genitals , clear libidos.
For a certain notably brutal, skeptical animal, the character Bluey, the battle against unicorns transforms into a path to power — and specifically to authority over his more tender, nicer brother Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor , a seeming antisocial figure , and while fear dominates his unit and claims his teammates sequentially, he takes progressively control personally, via progressively violent, destructive ways.
At the same time, these mythical beings are experiencing their own terror, through a spreading, destructive monster in their forest.
“In the early stages, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “However it turns into a more intense and melancholic movie. And by the end, it’s a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the more quirky movies from an iconic filmmaker, that discover a mischievous joy in letting drawn beings curse, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it evolves into more akin to a darker movie from that artist, featuring progressively visual gore and a noticeable link to the real horror of battle.
By the end, it’s an outright Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The terror that turns the film a perfect Halloween movie begins a lot earlier than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore lovers of violence, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who want to see a film they’ve never watched previously, and who can handle a narrative which delivers no restraint.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the conclusion will dig under your skin and linger.
