Keeper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her recently published personal story was never intended to “damage others” and expressed concern that media response has been “misrepresented.”

Controversial Comments and Fan Backlash

The retired international goalkeeper, who was instrumental in the Euro 2022 victory, received criticism from supporters and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after sharing views about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and manager Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “rewarding bad behaviour” by reinstating Hampton to the England squad after dropping her for being “unruly and inconsistent.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps stated publicly.

Explaining Her Motives

Earps clearly stated that the autobiography was never intended to damage anyone.

• “My memoir wasn’t created to criticize others in any shape or form.”
• “That isn’t my personality as a individual.”
• “This reflects reality. It has repercussions. It is not entertainment.”

She also discussed how female soccer has evolved into a realm that has become “a bit like entertainment,” where private matters are analyzed in detail for people’s enjoyment.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps discussed being replaced as England’s number one prior to Euro 2025 and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She explained it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a clash of viewpoints—and she continues to admire the coach.

“There were things that occurred during that period that I hoped had unfolded otherwise,” Earps stated.

Personal Struggles

In her book, Earps shared details of the harassment she endured at school, describing it as a “really hard” part to revisit because it revived past pain.

• “I didn’t stand up back then.”
• “I frequently thought that people were against me for most of my life.”
• “I became accustomed to feel like people were indifferent.”

These feelings led to anxiety episodes, and Earps shared she struggled with body image and used alcohol during the global health crisis to manage emotional difficulties.

Relationships and Goals

Earps publicly revealed that she is in a partnership with Kitty and expressed pride about her partnership.

She also discussed her desire to be a mother and revealed she has frozen her eggs for later fertility treatment.

“I would love to be a mother and have a household,” Earps stated. “I love playing football, but I hope to have a child later down the line.”

Earps portrayed the medical treatment as “crazy and invasive” and pushed for more studies tailored to sports professionals undergoing equivalent processes.

During her remarks, Earps emphasized that she has no regrets about her career or life decisions, stressing that she always acted with integrity.
