Is it Wise to Use Frozen Water to Irrigate Your Plants?
This Core Problem
Numerous indoor plant succumbs to excessive care; watering them each time you pass by is often terminal. Using ice cubes to hydrate pledges slower and more deliberate hydration. Yet, does it really work?
This Proposed Method
Set a couple of ice blocks on top of the potting mix. The concept is that while the ice thaws, it steadily dispenses water, giving the root system time to absorb it and avoiding overly wet soil.
A Closer Look
This technique is most effective for small pots and plants averse to excess moisture, for instance moth orchids. But, a great many of tropical foliage plants are averse to the cold. Their roots are adapted for temperate conditions, and icy water can shock or hurt them. Ambient climate has a big part in the technique's success: in a warm space, the ice will dissolve almost instantly, giving minimal value, while in a chilly area it may linger excessively, cooling the roots and reducing water uptake. Always ensure ice cubes are frozen from fresh, potable water and never force them in contact with plant stems or delicate roots.
The Trial
This was tested on a common orchid. Two cubes per week kept the roots evenly moist without waterlogging. However, trying the same trick on a prayer plant led to browning at the foliage margins, a telltale indication of temperature shock.
The Final Verdict
The ice cube approach may succeed for Phalaenopsis, yet it isn't ideal for the majority of tropical-origin indoor plants and depends heavily on ambient temperature. As a result, this hack is not advised; room-temperature water given carefully continues to be the safest method to effectively moisten your green companions.
