Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
