Strong cold-season gusts brought walls down upon flimsy tents sheltering people uprooted by war in Gaza, killing at least four people. This tragedy highlights the dangerous situation that persist after over 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides No Respite from Harsh Weather

Although a ceasefire has been active from last fall, humanitarian organizations state that residents broadly lack the adequate housing necessary to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia overnight.

"International actors has enabled us to experience loss of life in every possible way," said Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three people of a single family — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre tall wall collapsed on top of their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 others were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on that day started clearing the debris that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, plastic sheeting, blankets and clothing as well as nutrition and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of Palestinians reside in makeshift shelters since their houses were reduced to ruins over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza under the truce.

Those figures, he said, reflected cases where enough details had been compiled to justify documentation, but the overall count is believed to be greater. He noted that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"Although 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," the spokesperson informed reporters at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "So what the international community now calls quiet would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of over 2 million people has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while facing shortages of assistance and a absence of more substantial temporary housing, which is urgently needed during the colder season. It’s the 3rd cold season after the war between Israel and the group began on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered around twelve hundred individuals and abducted 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority says more than 71,400 people have been killed in the subsequent military campaign.
