The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
