Chainsaw Man Leads the U.S. Cinema Earnings in First Weekend
Can Sony claim to have repeated their success? Coming after the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million worldwide, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has surpassed the hundred-million-dollar threshold internationally, attaining a global total of over $108 million in its opening frame. This feature surpassed the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second weekend in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Notable American and Global Performance
Directed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It brought in $18.2M in the U.S. after a powerful five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Overseas, the MAPPA-produced feature earned $14.7 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million via Sony ($43.1 million abroad, $18.2 million stateside). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.
Comparisons to Previous Successful Anime Films
Anime marketing agency an industry expert had earlier commented, comparing the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and opened to a nearly identical eighteen million dollars stateside. The new film's debut weekend is in line with that benchmark, while its $108 million worldwide total is now positioned just behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6 million overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will earn the numbers of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a significant success for the distributor.
Promotional Campaigns Drive Box Office Dominance
Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to boost their supremacy at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc advertising push launched at the Anime Expo in LA in July with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and photo opportunities with Pochita, then continued with a major presence at NYCC including never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and more MAPPA sessions. Moreover, organizers held an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and influencers alike after the last day of the convention.
