Arne Slot Maintains He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it's natural for questions to be asked about his future following a further convincing loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in twelve games, representing the club's poorest streak since being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I have got a lot of backing from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be nice to change things and earn three points naturally but when you're coaching a team and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I accept my situation. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a tough spot but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to provide details on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me every single minute of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “During our regular exchanges I feel the trust. But I've not talked to them since this defeat yet so we'll see.”
Persistent Issues and Squad Response
Slot expressed regret over known weaknesses from his Liverpool side in their Champions League loss, specifically wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his assessment of the club’s predicament.
“I haven't got the answers. Truthfully, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder said.
“It is not good enough. I don't need to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad inside. I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It's tough because I play for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool since I was young.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a period such as this with outcomes so bad.”
Jones finished, “However we still have that badge on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we'll continue to battle.”
“We will attempt to get this team return to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and the reason it's called the top club in the world.”
“However currently, things are bad and it needs to change.”
