Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
