Per data from Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have lost their lives while in custody since October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has reported that the true toll is likely significantly larger, due to hundreds of disappeared detainees from Gaza.

The military finalized data on custodial deaths for May 2024, and the prison service during September 2024. Researchers discovered a further 35 casualties in confinement following these periods and validated them with Israeli authorities.

Despite the overall count of fatalities documented being substantially larger than earlier projections, it almost certainly fails to capture the full scale of losses among Palestinians, according to the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.

“Even though we are presenting proof for a larger total of casualties than previously reported, this is not a full picture,” he stated. “We are confident that there are even now individuals who died in detention that we are unaware of.”
